The Portuguese Podengo is a very ancient dog breed thought to have come to the Iberian Peninsula with the Phoenicians in around 1000 BC and later crossbred with the dogs brought by the Moors in the seventh century. When in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries the Portuguese navigated the globe, Podengo dogs (especially the small-sized dog) travelled aboard their caravels, and it is believed that this dog breed is at the origin of other breeds in the world, as remarkable similarities to the Podengo persist in many breeds found on the routes of the Portuguese discoverers.
The Podengo comes in three sizes: large (55 to 70 cm), medium (40 to 50 cm) and small (20 to 30 cm). All three sizes also come in two hair coats: smooth and wire (or rough) coat. As to the hair colours, they are mainly yellow and redish-yellow in three shades, but fake black and unicoloured or with white markings are also accepted. The Podengo is one of the healthiest dog breeds.
The Podengo is a hound dog, the type of the game depending on the size of the dog. The small-sized dog is essentially a rabbit hunter. Due to his lively and affectionate behaviour he is a good companion dog. Whatever the size, though, Podengo dogs show alertness and loyalty to their master and family.
Did you know that the Portuguese Podengos have starred in Hollywood movies? Oh yeah! In films such as Soccer Dog, Three Wishes or even Zeus and Roxanne, Podengos were movie star dogs!
Chica and Minnie, the two puppies in the photo, are small-sized Podengos with wire hair.
