The pet dog story Penguin and the Fig tree takes place in the beach of Figueira da Foz.
Washed by the blue Atlantic Ocean, this well-known beach is also a marvellous bay.
As in the ocean there are plenty of fish, many of the sea beaches are also fishing beaches. This is the case of a Buarcos Beach, a beach nearby, which continues to be today, as in the old days, a fishing beach.
Day after day the simple and hard-working fishermen challenge the sea in their trawlers (traineira in Portuguese), small boats, typical and colourful, with which they fish using a large net called trawl (traina in Portuguese.
Can you imagine how a fisherman's life is harsh and dangerous?
But without these brave people we wouldn't have fresh fish on our table!
As for weekend fishermen, they will find in the River Mondego - the only great river in Portugal that rises within the country - enough fish to bite the hook.

Due to the strong and large waves coming from the ocean, the Buarcos Beach is a paradise for surfers, but other water sports like sailing also find there the ideal environment.

If you enjoy hiking, at a short distance from the beach you find the mountain range of Serra da Boa Viagem (meaning Mountain of Good Trip). As its name implies, this mountain range is an invitation to adventure and the discovery of Nature.
And if you have the soul of an artist, if you dream of becoming a painter or a poet, the wonderful colours of the sunset by the sea are an inspirational source;
and an invitation to contemplate the beauty that surrounds you, and to think about the world you hope to discover when you grow up.

Now let's learn the names of the oceans, these huge bodies of salt water that cover nearly three fourths of the surface of the planet.
The planet has one global ocean, but for convenience and better understanding it is divided into distinct geographic regions: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic and Antarctic Oceans.
The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean in the world; it is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Antilles Sea.
